Recession Policy: The Past and the Future

SEPT 9, 2011

The economic indicators around the world have not been positive, and the question 'What should Congress/TheFed/Obama do next?' has been much heard in the media. The Economist recently staged an online debate on the issue, and we start with 3 background pieces from that debate. Article 1, Article 2, and Article 3.

Looking back now, our colleague Tim Conley (with Bill Dupor of Ohio State) have done an analysis of the effect of the first US stimulus package, which one hopes will be very useful in the debate about what to do next. They find it wasn't very stimulating, a claim that got them tons of media attention, much of it negative. Two examples of that are attached, also. Article 1; Article 2.

All of this seems highly relevant for the BIG question: what did the last US attempt at stimulus accomplish, and what can we learn from it? Something, one hopes.
